Profile
"The first time I saw Peter's work I was astounded initially by the beauty and integrity that his pieces command" - Auckland Herald 1998
Peter Stewart's enthusiasm, drive and unrestricted talent have brought him a long way in a relatively short time.
Peter's background is as diverse and colourful as his range of sculptural masterpieces. After excelling in golf, rugby and national title athletics, he went on to work as a jackaroo, carpenter and landscaper. Peter began working with clay later on in life to fulfill his dream - to stretch one of his many talents to its full potential.
Peter's first exhibition, "Beneath the bait you Find the Fish" saw phenomenal success, with all ceramic works selling out at a time when the NZ ceramic market was in decline.
A large percentage of Peter's work is currently sold overseas and works have been procured for a variety of private collections throughout the world. Peter also produces a large range of private commissions for corporations and interior designers - a testimony to his talent and the widespread appreciation of his work.
Peter Stewart has wild and ambitious ideas on art and creativity. Self taught and unburdened by programmed techniques or educational restraints, Peter chooses to isolate himself and remain uninfluenced by others. This is clearly reflected in his work - fresh, unique and innovative.
The instant and universal appeal of Peter's work distinguishes it from traditional ceramics. He is determined to create art that will stand up to public scrutiny - rather than the opinions of fellow artists or industry professionals.
The future is potentially unlimited for this talented individual. A man imbued with a creative spirit - Peter Stewart is a leader not a follower.

"Without a dream we are lost. This is the tip of my iceberg, my dream" - Peter Stewart
"My dabblings with clay began on the kitchen table in January I995 and 6 months later I issued myself a challenge: to put all my energy into a living dream. That dream was to stretch my talents to the extreme.
My works come from that dream, and the fact that clay is the medium is secondary.
I am self taught - free. No programmed techniques or educational restraints. I choose to isolate myself I want no influence from others.
My work is inspired by my travels, and my motivation by my dream. The goosebumps and tears come from the music.
Clay allows me to do anything and I push it to its limits, and it pushes me back. Is this love???
Like the Horse Whisperer, I too feel the gift.
Without a dream we are lost. This is the tip of my iceberg, my dream."
